Construction Definitions

I am sure some of you are thinking "construction definitions" where did that idea come from? I was looking on the internet and stumbled across a question that read something like this "Should I use a renovator, or a contractor to remodel my kitchen"?

It dawned on me that I have never seen a page that explained the different titles people call themselves in the home improvement and new construction profession. So I thought this page may be helpful to some people. And this site is about being helpful! There are many titles used, but here is a short list of the most common:

GENERAL CONTRACTOR-also know as the builder. The general contractor is responsible for the entire project whether it be home improvement or new construction. Typically the customer only deals with the General Contractor. The General contractor will deal with the employees, sub contractors, and material suppliers. This is usually a great relief to the customer as they do not have to worry about the day to day logistics of the project. The General Contractor works for the customer.

SUB CONTRACTOR-”Subs” are responsible for parts of the project. Usually subs answer to, and work for the General Contractor (unless your are managing your own project, then they work for you). Normally they will be paid by the General Contractor. If so inclined, the General Contractor can sub out the entire project and simply manage all the subs. These types of General Contractors are called “suit and tie” builders because they never actually perform any of the physical tasks. Examples of sub contractors are, plumbers, framers, electricians, flooring installers, trim carpenters……..etc.

CARPENTER-Is a skilled individual who performs a wide variety of woodworking tasks. The word carpenter is a loosely used word in the construction trades and generally refers to a wide variety of home improvement personnel. Carpenters can then be divided into categories such as:

Rough carpenters-known as framers.

Finish or Trim carpenters- they mainly install but are not limited to: Base (trim on the floor), crown molding (trim on the ceiling), and casing(trim around doors and windows).

REMODELER-A term for an individual that improves existing structures.

RENOVATOR-A term for a individual that improves existing structures.

So when deciding whether to hire a “carpenter” or a “remodeled” or a “contactor” or whatever name one calls himself, it still comes down to the same criteria: Is he qualified, licensed and insured and does he have references? Conduct a contractor interview to help insure you get the best man for the job.
